So I don't know if I want to be a primary-care doctor or a psychiatrist when I grow up. Any advice, opinions, or facetious remarks? (Talmudic references, or lehavdl quotes from Auden, are always appreciated, whether or not they're relevant.)

I think if you go into psychiatry, you should do some public service work with it in addition to whatever regular, well-paying work you do. In NYC, it's very hard to find good psychiatrists who (a) accept insurance or (b) charge less than $300/hour. So regular folks like me, with full-time, non-profit jobs, have to rely on their primary care physicians to prescribe and monitor psychotropic drugs and find an MSW for talk therapy.
